Top 5 Hay fever Friendly Flowers

As I sit here...Mid June, the longest day is only a few days away, the tree's are green, the summer flowers are beginning to bloom and the sneezing and eye watering is out of control.

It can only be hay fever season.

Now, for a Flower Grower and Florist this is not an ideal situation to be in, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

But it got me thinking, there must be people out there, that have to avoid flowers like the plague, and this quite frankly makes me sad.

Are you one of those people? Do you feel like you're missing out on beautiful flowers every year, because you just can't have them in the house?

If this sounds familiar, then this Blog is for you.

I've put together a list of my Top 5 hay fever friendly flowers, to help you flower loving hay fever sufferers out there enjoy gorgeous blooms in your home all year long.

And trust me, there are still some beauties out there, that pack a punch in the flower world and are hypoallergenic.

Number 1 - Roses

The ultimate queen of the British Summer Flower Garden.

Roses are a great choice, and that's why they are my number 1.

They come in a whole array of stunning colours and scents, and best of all, they release minimal pollen into the air.

Number 2 - Antirrhinum (Snapdragons)

Snaps are a true fan favourite, especially amongst Florist and Flower farmers.

With their beautiful pastel tones, or vibrant pops of colour, they look good almost anywhere and really give that cottage garden vibe to a display.

They are great for allergy sufferers as their tightly closed buds minimise how much pollen can be released.

Loved by the bees, they are a must have pollinator in your garden.

Antirrhinum are available to order from wholesale all year round, but you can't beat the fresh cut variety from your local flower farm.

Number 3 - Peony

The only reason this beauty is not number 1 for me is due to it's short season.

I adore them, and so does half the nation. You guys go wild for them, so much so that we as florists have to rein you back in a bit, and give you a little reality check when you're still asking us for peonies in September and October..ha!

Regardless of their short season (April - June) these beauties certainly are an absolute show stopper.

And the best thing....Hay fever friendly! Peonies are pollinated by the insects that dine on them, rather than being pollinated by the wind carrying their pollen.

This surprised me too, I'd never actually thought of it like that before. You always hear about flowers being pollinated by insects, but you never sit down to think about the reason you suffer with hay fever is because the wind and climate is doing all the circulating.

Number 4 - Gladiolus

When people ask me what my favourite flowers are, I normally come up with a list of about 4 or 5 and the Gladioli is definitely on that list! I love them. With their tall majestic towers of blooms that just look spectacular in the garden, home or bouquet.

The bees absolutely LOVE them. Their pollen is thick and sticky meaning it doesn't fly away in the wind, and can only be collected by insect pollinators, so it's a safe bet for hay fever sufferers.

Fun Fact - The Gladiolus or Gladioli as most people call them is the official flower of the 40th Wedding Anniversary

Number 5 - Hydrangea

Another fan favourite of ours. Pollinated by bees, these are perfect for you as a hay fever sufferer, despite the large bloom heads they give off minimal pollen and are even safe when dried.

These impactful flowers are a show stopper and a great filler in floral designs.

Hydrangeas are easy to grow, but you need to give them time. If you're patient enough within 5 years you can go from a little potted plant to a gorgeous perennial display, but it's well worthy the wait.

They come in a variety of colours, and yet again we just love them!

The Worst offenders?

Would you like to know the worst offenders for Pollen related hay fever?

  • Sunflowers - Their giant bloom heads create a lot of pollen

  • Lilies - Well known for releasing a lot of pollen. If you're a Lilly lover then always ask your florist to remove the pollen. We prefer it that way too.

  • Gerberas - These beauties are serious pollen producers

  • Dahlias - These wonders pack a pollen punch! However over the years they have bred hybrid varieties to create non pollen variants.

Fun Fact? We specialise in Sunflowers and Dahlias here at The Country Dwellers Flower Patch, and wouldn't change it for the world.

We both suffer from hay fever but lucky for us, we are grass and tree pollen sufferers..ha!

If you suffer with hay fever but love flowers, always speak to your local florist for help and advice.
